Nov. Stamp Of The Month

Nov. Stamp Of The Month
Cherish The Day set of 44

So I have a secret to tell you!  I have been playing with the November Stamp Of The Month
Cherish The Day set of 44and I have had so much fun.
The secret is that I created all of this with out using my scissors.
I know you are thinking I am crazy and how could I possibly make any paper crafts without my scissors?

First of all I used my Cricuit Art Philosophy Cartridge to cut out all of the tags, pop up boxes, tickets and even the cute fry box!   It was so fast and easy it left me more time to stamp and create beautiful works of art.

The Fry Box makes the perfect Studio J gift card holder ( Don't have a Studio J gift card? Give me a call and we can take care of that)  It is the perfect gift for everyone on your Christmas List!

The best part of the Stamp Of The Month set is you can get it for as little as $5.00.
Get ready to create all of your holiday gifts Faster, Simpler and Easier!

Stamp Of The Month Oct. 2011

I love to draw inspiration from others as I prepare to create artwork.  I will usually find something that catches my eye and then build on that to make it my own.  I was inspired by Annette G. for both of these projects, then learned a new technique from Vicki W.

This card features the cute stocking from the stamp set and the Roxie paper.  The card base was cut with the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge, which features 100 different cards options!

Technique:  Make a custom embossing powder by mixing 2 parts Clear Detail Embossing Powder to 1 part Prisma Glitter.  Stamp the Stocking on a small piece of Colonial White Cardstock, then using the Versa Mark Stamp pad,  cover the entire surface of the stocking with Versa Mark Ink.  Cover with your custom embossing powder and shake off excess.  Using a Craft Heater, heat from the bottom of your piece.  Hold the Craft Heater a good distance away from your paper and heat only long enough to melt the powder.  If you over heat the paper, you will lose the beautiful all-over glitter effect.  You might have to practice a couple of times to get it just right.  Repeat on the other stocking and both of the cuffs.  Assemble card as shown in the photo.   Hint:  Rather than trying to push the Rhinestone brad through the thick ribbon, I cut off the prongs and glued it on with Liquid Glass.

Making Great Black And White Photos

Halloween is almost here and you’ll be taking those traditional photos of your ghosts, goblins and fairy princesses. A fun way to capture some Halloween spirit is to turn some of your color pictures into black and white.  It is very easy to do using Studio J, just drag and drop your photo into a layout, click on the Filter drop down and you can change it to Black and White or Sepia. Using these filters is a perfect match with the new Mischief paper. Don’t be scared – give it a try!

Here are 5 Tips for your Black and White Photos to come out looking sharp.
Shape and Form - When looking for a good shot, look beyond the colors in a scene and instead focus you attention on the shapes. Try to create an interesting composition.
Contrast - Without differences in color to separate elements in your shot, you must instead introduce contrasting shades. Use contrast to help your main subject stand out – such as a light subject against a dark background.
Pattern - Black and white photography gives you a much better chance of capturing interesting patterns because it focuses the viewer's attention on the shapes formed by the elements in a scene.
Texture - In the same way that patterns can be lost in color photography, textures can be too. With black and white photos, the mind no longer has that color information to work with, so it pays more attention and focuses on the elements such as texture and pattern.
Lighting - Lighting is absolutely key to a good black and white photograph because it affects all of the above elements - shape, contrast, pattern and texture.
Side lighting often produces the most dramatic black and white photos. It picks out the edges of shapes and increases contrast by adding highlights, and the shadows it creates add interest to the scene as well as enhancing textures and patterns.

Name That Paper

Can you name the paper packet used in this Studio J layout?  Stumped? It’s Michief! That’s right…a
Halloween themed paper! Would you have ever dreamed of using Halloween paper on a Homecoming
layout? That’s one of the benefits of Studio J.  You can play with paper combinations that you wouldn’t
normally try! On this Homecoming layout, I simply chose any paper kit mix I wanted. Then I swapped the
papers for two of the more traditional papers in the kit. Added some accents that matched the colors in the
picture and voila! A surprise layout that does not look “Halloween” at all. So the next time you hop on
Studio J, play around with swapping papers and the different looks and combinations that you can get!

Workshop On The Go Bonus Projects

I sat down and played with the Mischief Workshop On The Go Kit (G1029)
After I finished this darling layout I had lots of supplies left so I decided to make a few more projects.
To Create Additional Artwork
Use your remaining supplies and one of our how-to books (from page 10 in our Autumn/Winter 2011 Idea Book) to complete this layout.
I used the Magic (9034) how-to book and did the layout on page 48.

I also created this darling Spooky Banner
I used my Cricut Art Philosophy Cartridge to cut out the
SPOOKY letters and the flowers.
I added a few Clear Sparkles to the letters and our new Silver
Glitz Glitter Gel to the flowers to make them shine!

Close to my Heart is a great company to join as a consultant at any time. The company motto is Faster, Simpler, Easier….because they know that is what people need right now. They have been so good to go with the trends. For example it started as a stamping company, but added scrapbooking in as that craze started. Then when things started going more digital, they added Studio J as a “Faster, Simpler, Easier” way to make beautiful digital layouts to compliment the traditional scrapbook layouts. Now recently we have added a cricut cartridge to the items we sell. And it has been a huge hit. It has over 700 cutouts on one cartridge and when people see the little book…their eyes pop. It is just so versatile and has such great features! Once again, Close to my Heart keeps up with the trends. Check out this fun doorhanger using the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge made by Mary Beth Wright…it was simple, fast and easy!!! Here is what she came up with using the Mischief paper. Look at those cute black button brads. Leave it to Close to my Heart to just keep making things better for us.
So why not join in the fun?

September Photo Tips

Quick tips to make taking professional looking pictures Faster, Simpler and Easier.

Whether you are staying inside or you are out enjoying the sunshine, the use of a light reflector can make a good photo great for when it comes time to scrapbook or make a Studio J Layout!   Great photos can make your scrapbook pages and Studio J Layouts shine!
Here are a few simple tips on making and using a light reflector in your photography compare the two images.
The first image was taken without a reflector, casting harsh shadows on her face.

In the second shot, I positioned a reflector in front of my subject (towards the incoming light), bouncing the light and

brightening her darling face.

Create Your Own Reflector
Light reflectors are available to purchase at local photography stores.
Or you can make your own in a few simple steps using foil and cardboard.
Here’s how:

1. Cut cardboard piece to desired size.

2. Score in thirds.

3. Wrap foil around cardboard, and smooth out wrinkles.

4. Secure foil in place using tape.

Additional Reflector Options
There are other tricks to the trade when it comes to bouncing and reflecting light.

Here are a few ideas to try:
Wear White: Reflecting light can be as simple as throwing on a white shirt.  Light bounces off of white and will naturally reflect on your subject it you aren’t a great distance away.

Use White Foam Board: Foam core boards are available at local craft stores and are a great reflector option. Plus, they are lightweight and inexpensive, making them a nice photo-equipment option

Take a plain list and spice it up a bit with these stamps, slap a magnet on the back and you have a darling refrigerator list (hmm, sounds like good neighbor gifts for Christmas). A composition notebook (on sale now with back to school) would be darling decorated up with these. And the possibilities for scrapbook journaling are huge. So take advantage of the opportunity to get this set in September because once October rolls around, it’s gone! And with a $50.00 purchase, it is only $5.00. Now that’s worth remembering!
